John began developing web sites while working at Melbourne University in 1997, and has since completed a Graduate Diploma in Web and Internet Computing at RMIT.
John taught website design at Macedon Ranges Further Education Centre.
He applies a number of principles to web site design to make sites that are fast to download and intuitively easy to use:
KIS - Keep it Simple. Don't use unnecessarily complicated technologies and tricks that show that the designer is clever, but provide nothing for the user.
Minimise graphics - Only use graphics where necessary, keep them small and minimise the file size.
Structure the information in a clear and logical manner.
Make the design as simple, clear and intuitive as possible.
Sites are coded in plain text editor to keep the code clean and tight.
Format with Style Sheets. Style sheets centralise all (or most) the formatting for a website into a single file. This makes it easy to be consistent, easy to make updates and allows the site to load more quickly.
